Monrovia is headquartered in Azusa, California. Throughout the country, we operate in different climate zones, which allows us to produce a wider variety of plants. We have nurseries in Visalia, California; Dayton, Oregon; Cairo, Georgia; and La Grange, North Carolina.
These growing nurseries, encompassing 4,724 acres, are not open to the public. Our plants are sent from our nurseries in climate-controlled trucks to more than 5,000 fine garden centers across North America.
Monrovia was founded in 1926 in the city of Monrovia, California and moved a few miles east, 30 years later, to the city of Azusa, at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. For decades, this 545-acre property was the primary growing location, providing plants to all North America. In 2004, after years of planning, we moved our California nursery from Southern California to the central region of the state. This allowed a more suitable growing climate for plants that will be shipped throughout the country and room to expand our operations. Monrovia's corporate headquarters remain in Azusa, housed in an early 1900s California Craftsman style home that has served as the executive offices for more 53 years. Three acres of display gardens surround the office.
Situated in the San Joaquin Valley, Visalia is our newest facility, encompassing more than 1,000 acres. It is here where we grow wide range of plant material for all the zones nationwide. We grow many of our topiary trees, plus our citrus - more than 40 varieties of lemons, oranges, tangerines, limes, grapefruits, tangelos, blood oranges and kumquats. Adjacent to the Visalia nursery, we established a 60-acre Camellia nursery, known as Venice Hills, where we grow more than 60 varieties. By keeping the Camellias totally separate from other nursery plants, we can prevent the spread of harmful pathogens, for which Camellias are host plants.
Located in the Willamette Valley, southwest of Portland, this 1,000-acre nursery truly captures the spirit of our Craftsman heritage. Our modern Craftsman-style building and landscaped grounds was established in 1993. Our second nursery location has given us an extraordinary opportunity to expand our plant mix and learn about new varieties we were unable to grow in Southern California. Oregon's climate is ideal for growing our conifers, maples, broadleaf shrubs and other cold-hardy plants. Five years ago we moved our tissue culture lab from the Azusa nursery and increased the size by tenfold.
Our Southern heritage shines at our Cairo location. Founded in 1887, this location now covers more than 1,100 acres. Here we have expanded our collection of Holly and Crape Myrtles to include the many exciting varieties that we offer.
Cairo is 35 miles due north of Tallahassee, Florida, and is convenient to Interstates 10 and 75. Product from this southernmost location is shipped up the Eastern Seaboard and westward to Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri.
This 290-acre facility in eastern North Carolina produces plants primarily for shipment within the Eastern United States. Our newest nursery is growing rapidly, and its plant availability includes a wide range of sizes and varieties suited especially for customers along the Eastern Seaboard.
