Care Information
Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a neat appearance, remove old foliage before new leaves emerge. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring. Pruning time: spring after flowering.
Design Ideas
Wonderful planted in mass with a solid wall background to highlight the flowers. Also attractive planted out in the open next to a pond or pool. The delicate, airy flowers wave and shimmer in the wind. This plant is versatile and can be mixed into ornamental or native landscape designs.
Companion Plants
Versatile plant that looks best planted in drifts or with other ornamental or native shrubs and perennials. Green evergreen shrubs like Holly and Euonymus highlight the light, airy blooms, or try Blueberry, Heath and Scotch Broom for added interest and color.
History
The Genus (A group of related species classified within a family) of this plant is named for Gotthilf Heinrich Ernst Muhlenberg (1753-1815),a Lutheran minister and the first president of Franklin College in Pennsylvania. He is most famous due to his work in the field of botany where he named and classified over 150 species of plants. Muhlenbergia capillaris is native to the Southern U.S and found in pine flatlands, coastal uplands and sandy prairies along the Gulf States.
